31.01.17 - category and defining concept

31. 01. 17

Re- examining the course requirements for the major, i have categorised my essay under 'Critical analysis of a major historical work'. in doing so i have researched critical analysis and found a website which breaks down the key areas in which i need to address.
Also helping me to construct my plan for this major will be my preliminary essay in modern history which questions the significance of Betty Friedan's The Feminine Mystique and her impact of starting the second wave of feminist revolution in America.
Collectively these resources, along with many others i aim to deconstruct the significance of Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee by Dee Brown, analysing its impact in the 1970s, the importance it holds today ( continuity and change) and how other books have aimed to change the image of the colonisation of america and the settlers relationship with native americans.

Since my last post i have also bought and begun to read the book i am analysing. In its introduction alone i was captivated as he explores the readers relationship with this book.
here is a paragraph:
"this is not a cheerful book, but history has a way of intruding upon the present, and perhaps those who read it will have a clearing understanding of what the american indian is, by knowing what he was."
"And if readers of this book should ever chance to see the poverty, the hopelessness, and the squalor of a modern index reservation, they may find it possible to truly understand the reasons why."
